Daily Scripture and Teachings

Today's Verse

Don't just read the Word of God daily . . . live it

Love and Tears

n terms of importance, we believe that the following words of Jesus are among the most crucial for His followers to observe: "Love one another as I have loved you."

n terms of summing up how we believe Jesus views much of what goes on in the name of "Christian", we believe the following verse is among the most telling: "Jesus wept."

Image of Merciful Love
Imagine a large red heart with a cross on the top of it. Inside the heart are written these words: God's will, simplicity, prayer, trust, humility. These words come from my spiritual journal and recent experience with the Lord. I have this image with these words written in my small New Testament, which I keep in my shirt pocket. They remind me of the importance of loving God and others and doing God's will above all else in my life.

Consider drawing this image in your bible or perhaps on a sheet of paper somewhere in your house as a reminder to love God and do His will and live out the other means of growing in holiness. You can also remember the five words on your hand, starting with God's will on your thumb and moving down to your little finger, which represents humilty. May the Lord help you to be a missionary of Merciful Love today

Today at Heartlight...

Five Weapons Against Satan

The following practices can be seen as five weapons against satan. These weapons are like little "stones" that we can use, like David used against Goliath, to defeat satan:

Prayer
Fasting
Reading of the Bible
Confession
Holy Communion

Union of Love with Jesus

"Abide in my love," said Jesus. We are called to live continually in the love of Jesus. Everywhere we go, everything we say, all that we do must be immersed in the presence and love of God. With the eyes of faith we can see God's glory present everywhere, in every creature, from the stars of the universe to a tiny flower or insect. Ask the Lord to help you to live on this earth in a way that allows you to have a foretaste of the glory of Heaven.

Daily Wisdom

The Heart of Jesus

Jesus' Heart is full of love for all people. His heart was full of compassion on the hungry crowds of people, in need of physical and spiritual food. His Heart was sorrowful in the Garden just before his passion. His Heart was wounded for our sins and pierced with a lance. His Heart is open for us to enter into it and remain in His love. His Heart comes to us in Holy Communion, His own Body and Blood. Open your heart to Jesus today and invited Him to fill you more and more with His amazing love. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Body and Blood of Christ
Jesus gave Himself to His apostles at the Last supper in the Holy Eucharist: the bread and wine that became His Body and Blood. This gift cleanses us from sin and brings us the life of the Risen Lord. "Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ save me," says a popular prayer after Communion. A prayer at Fatima goes, "Most Holy Trinity, I adore You. My God, my God, I love You in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Receive Jesus in Holy Communion today with great love. Jesus said, "I am the Bread of Life. Whoever eats this Bread will live forever."

The Lord will provide
Do your best and God will do the rest. The Lord will provide. It takes trust. We need to use our talents, treasure and time, but we also need to leave everything in God's hands for Him to work out and open doors for us. Jesus helped people with spiritual and physical illness. He had compassion on the crowds and miraculously fed them. He helped the apostles to catch a huge amount of fish after they had been fishing all night and caught nothing. Come to Jesus today in your need and He will supply what you need in your life.

God is our Father
God created all people to know, love and serve Him. Our destiny is the kingdom of Heaven where we will see God face to face. We should honor our earthly fathers and show our love and gratitude for all they are and all they have done for us. We should also pray for priests, who are spiritual fathers. It is they who baptize us and introduce us into the family of God. Padre Pio (seen above) is a recently canonized priest who bore the wounds of Jesus in his hands, feet and side for over 50 years. A good father is someone who is willing to bear with hardship out of love for God and his family.

Judge not
"Judge not lest ye be judged", Jesus said. It is so easy for us to criticize others, especially when they are not present. We are called to use our speech to build up others, not to tear them down. There is a place for correcting others privately, but that is different than having a gossip session with our friends. Gossip grieves the Holy Spirit within us. Love must prevail in our thoughts, speech and actions, as in the life of St. Therese of Liseux, the Little Flower. Another time Jesus told us that we will have to give an account of every idle word that we speak. Words are important, because they reveal what fills our hearts. Let us "speak the truth in love."

Seek and you shall find

We've all lost something. When we do we begin a sometimes frantic search for what we lost. If we find it we rejoice! Jesus said "seek and you shall find." He was not so much concerned with finding lost coins or other material things: He focused on what was truly important: our love relationship with God. Jesus came to restore that which we lost: communion with the Father. We should rejoice in the truth that we now are in God's kingdom already present here on earth. It is important that we desire holiness and intimate union with Jesus our Lord, Savior and God. Ask St. Anthony to pray for you to help you find Jesus more deeply in your life.

In word and deed

The end of the opening prayer for the Mass on the feast of St. Barnabas says, "Help us to proclaim the gospel by word and deed." This beautiful short prayer reminds us that we need God's help to be witness to the Gospel of Jesus. We can't do it on our own power. We also see that we are called to share Jesus with our words and deeds as well. They go hand in hand. The Apostles were those "sent out" by Jesus on a mission to proclaim the good news of God's kingdom revealed in Jesus His Son. By our Baptism we also are "sent out" to do the same thing in our own particular life situation. Ask the Lord Jesus to help you share His love with others today by your words and deeds. Let your light shine!

Led by the Spirit

Jesus was led by the Spirit. We too are called to be led by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit sets us free from all that would hold us back from knowing, loving and serving God. The Holy Spirit fills us with His power to bear witness to Jesus in this world in our thoughts, words and actions. We are the sons and daughters of God because the Holy Spirit came to dwell in us at Baptism. We can experience victory over sin and all evil by the power of the Holy Spirit when we surrender our will to God's will and open our hearts to His love poured out through the Spirit. May the Spirit of the Living God lead you today!

Don't Quit
On June 8th, 2003 (the feast of Pentecost), the opening day of our website, I received an e-mail from someone. All the message said, in capital letters, was QUIT. I wasn't expecting opposition so soon in this outreach, but I see it as a good sign. After all, remember how, after Pentecost, the Apostles were told to stop teaching in the name of Jesus and they refused, saying it was better to obey God rather than men. We won't quit spreading the good news through music and other means! No matter what God has called you to do, don't quit! It takes perseverence to enter the kingdom of Heaven.
